My summer at the University of Texas at Austin was a truly transformative experience. Stepping into an open-campus learning environment in the U.S. was a significant shift from what I was accustomed to, and I quickly found myself thriving. It was a period of intense learning, where I rediscovered my own study methods and found my footing as an all-rounder in group collaborations, working seamlessly with peers from diverse international backgrounds. This program not only enhanced my communication skills but also significantly sharpened my financial analysis and market insight capabilities. I'm proud to say I achieved an "A" grade in all my subjects, a testament to the immersive and engaging learning environment.

Project One: Unpacking Financial Health in Fashion

One of the highlights was my first major project, where my teammates from Taiwan and the UK and I delved into the fashion apparel market. We conducted a detailed comparative financial analysis of Ralph Lauren Corporation and PVH Corporation (Tommy Hilfiger). This wasn't just about crunching numbers; it was about understanding the stories behind them. I meticulously analyzed their profitability (like gross and net margins), solvency (current and quick ratios), and operational efficiency (inventory turnover, days sales outstanding). By comparing these key financial indicators, I assessed their competitive positions within the retail apparel industry. A significant part of my contribution involved leveraging DuPont analysis and the Bloomberg Terminal to process vast amounts of financial data, build comprehensive financial models, and generate insightful visual reports. This experience truly elevated my data processing and visualization skills, allowing me to present complex financial information with clarity.

Project Two: The Luckin Coffee Fraud – A Deep Dive into Corporate Integrity

The second project, focusing on the Luckin Coffee financial fraud scandal, was particularly impactful for me. This case study was instrumental in deepening my understanding of critical issues like corporate governance, audit failures, and the paramount importance of integrity in financial markets. I meticulously investigated how Luckin Coffee manipulated financial data through fabricated transactions, counterfeit coupons, and inflated revenues and profits. More importantly, I actively sought out early warning signs of fraud in their past financial statements, looking for unusually high revenue growth rates, profit margins inconsistent with peers, and significant discrepancies between cash flow and reported profits. This project didn't just enhance my grasp of accounting standards and auditing processes; it cultivated my critical thinking skills regarding potential risks hidden within financial data and reinforced the absolute necessity of ethical conduct and compliance in the financial sphere.

Beyond the Classroom: Cultivating Critical Thinking and Ethical Acumen

My time at UT Austin was more than just academic achievement; it was about cultivating a mindset. The open discussions, the diverse perspectives of my classmates, and the challenging real-world case studies pushed me to think critically and question assumptions. The Luckin Coffee case, in particular, was a stark reminder that finance isn't just about numbers; it's about trust, transparency, and accountability. This experience has profoundly shaped my perspective, reinforcing the idea that a strong ethical compass is as crucial as financial acumen in navigating the complexities of the modern business world. I left Texas with not just an "A" on my transcript, but a deeper understanding of the financial landscape and a reinforced commitment to ethical practice.
